Rollover Testing of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) on an Actual Highway

A follow-up study on rollover testing was conducted along a section of a remote rural highway using six full-size sport utility vehicles (SUVs) of differing makes and models. The vehicles were instrumented and towed to highway speeds before being released, at which point an automated steering controller steered the vehicles through a series of maneuvers intended to result in rollover. A total of eight tests were conducted and documented, six rollovers and two non-rollover events. The six rollover events provide trip and tumbling conditions for each vehicle. The two non-rollover attempts produced cornering tire marks and allowed for the documentation of near roll conditions for the two out-of-control vehicles. All eight tests presented are instrumented real-world type tests that were later correlated based upon the data obtained.

Development of the J2825 On-Highway Motorcycle Sound Test Procedure

In response to a growing need for a practical and technically valid method for measuring exhaust sound pressure levels (SPL) of on-highway motorcycles, the SAE Motorcycle Technical Steering Committee has developed Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J28251, “Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles,” which includes a new stationary sound test procedure and recommendations for limit values. Key goals of the development process included: minimal equipment requirements, ease of implementation by non-technical personnel, and consistency with the federal EPA requirements; in particular, vehicles compliant with the EPA requirements should not fail when assessed using J2825. Development of the recommended practice involved a comprehensive field study of 25 motorcycles and 76 different exhaust systems, ranging from relatively quiet OEM systems to unbaffled, aftermarket exhaust systems.

Stability Control of Four-Wheel-Drive Electric Vehicle with Electro-Hydraulic Braking System

Four-wheel-drive electric vehicles (4WD Evs) utilize in-wheel electric motors and Electro-Hydraulic Braking system (EHB). Then, all wheels torque can be controlled independently, and the braking pressure can be controlled more accurately and more fast than conventional braking system. Because of these advantages, 4WD Evs have potential applications in control engineering. In this paper, the in-wheel electric motors and EHB are applied as actuators in the vehicle stability control system. Based on the Direct Yaw-moment Control (DYC), the optimized wheel force distribution is given, and the coordination control of the hydraulic braking and the motor braking torque is considered. Then the EHB hardware-in-the-loop test bench is established in order to verify the effectiveness of the vehicle stability control algorithm through experiments.

Passenger Car Response to Interaction with Tractor-Trailer Steer Tire Lugs

Performing a reconstruction of sideswipe interactions is difficult due to the lack of permanent crush sustained by the vehicles involved. Previous studies have provided insight into the forces involved in creating various types of damage for vehicle-to-vehicle interactions during a sideswipe interaction. However, these data may not be applicable to the interaction that occurs when a tractor-trailer steer tire is involved. As demonstrated in previous studies, steer tire interaction produces a unique pattern of markings on the struck vehicle by the protruding lugs (wheel stud) of the steer tire. These studies have demonstrated that the pattern of cycloidal marks created by the wheel lugs can be used to calculate the relative speeds of the vehicles. While this is helpful in understanding the relative motion of the vehicles, it does not provide information regarding the forces applied at the point of contact.

An Accurate Modeling for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Wheel Motor Including Iron Loss

For high torque permanent magnet wheel motor, this paper describes an experimental research method to optimize and identify the motor parameters based on the results of offline calculation. In order to improve the accuracy of motor parameters identification, the motor model considering the affect of iron loss was established, and the motor parameters were identified using genetic algorithm (GA). Based on this, parameters validation experiment was performed. The results show that: parameters obtained by this method can be used to describe the steady-state and transient-state response of permanent magnet synchronous motors accurately.

On Improving CLEAN-SC Maps in The Wind Tunnel

When travelling in an open-jet wind tunnel, the path of an acoustic wave is affected by the flow causing a shift of source positions in acoustical maps of phased arrays outside the flow. The well-known approach of Amiet attempts to correct for this effect by computing travel times between microphones and map points based on the assumption that the boundary layer of the flow, the so-called shear-layer, is infinitely thin and refracts the acoustical ray in a conceptually analogy to optics. However, in reality, the turbulent nature of both the not-so thin shear-layer and the acoustic emission process itself causes an additional smearing of sources in acoustic maps, which in turn causes deconvolution methods based on these maps - the most prominent example being CLEAN-SC - to produce certain ring effects, so-called halos, around sources.

The evolution of conventional vehicles' efficiency for meeting carbon neutrality ambition.

In 2023, the European Union set more ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from passenger cars: the new fleet-wide average targets became 93.6 g/km for 2025, 49.5 g/km in 2030, going to 0 in 2035. One year away from the 2025 target, this study evaluates what contribution to CO2 reduction was achieved from new conventional vehicles and how to interpret forecasts for future efficiency gains. The European Commission’s vehicle efficiency cost-curves suggest that optimal technology adoption can guarantee up to 50% CO2 reduction by 2025 for conventional vehicles. Official registration data between 2013 and 2022, however, reveal only an average 14% increase in fuel efficiency in standard combustion vehicles, although reaching almost 23% for standard hybrids. The smallest gap between certified emissions and best-case scenarios is of 14 g/km, suggesting that some manufacturers’ declared values are approaching the optimum.

Development of the Volvo Lambda-Sond System

Volvo has developed the first production emission control system to fully utilize a three-way catalyst. Called the “Volvo Lambda-sond system”, it is applied to the 4-cylinder in-line B21 engine, and employs three essential new components - an exhaust gas composition sensor, an additional feed-back loop to the continuous fuel injection system, and the catalyst. Outstanding certification results were achieved, especially for NOx, combined with good driveability, power output, and fuel economy. The development and performance of the system, and the test procedures used, are described in detail, and its future potential and limitations are discussed.

Efficiency of Constant Velocity Universal Joints

Efficiency of Driveshafts have not been analyzed in great detail in the past due to their relatively high efficiency. However, it is possible to obtain about a 0.1 percent increase in fuel economy by decreasing driveshaft torque losses by about 20 percent, owing to the combination mode fuel calculation. In order to improve fuel economy it is necessary to increase the efficiency of the constant velocity universal joint (C.V.J.) used for driveshafts. Additionally, propeller shafts with improved heat characteristics are required. It is for these reasons that this project is conducted. In this paper, the motion of two typical joint used for front-engine, front-drive passenger cars is analyzed geometrically and efficiency formulas are derived. One of the joints is a Rzeppa joint, used on the wheel side of the driveshaft and the other is a tripot joint, used on the differential side. These formulas are then verified by experiment.

Experimental Investigation of the Droplet Field of a Rotating Vehicle Tyre

The consideration of vehicle soiling in the development process becomes ever more important because of the increasing customer demands on current vehicles and the increased use of camera and sensor systems due to autonomous driving. In the process of self-soiling, a soil-water mixture is whirled up by the rotation of the car’s own wheels and deposits on the vehicle surface. The validation of the soiling characteristics in vehicle development usually takes place in an experimental manner, but is increasingly supported by numerical simulations. The droplet field at the tyre has been investigated several times in the past. However, there are no published information regarding the physical background of the droplet formation process and the absolute droplet sizes considering the position at the tyre and the behaviour at different velocities.

Expanded Characterization of Force-Deflection Properties of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Systems

This paper reports on seventy additional tests conducted using a mechanical device described by Bonugli et al. [4]. The method utilized quasi-static loading of bumper systems and other vehicle components to measure their force-deflection properties. Corridors on the force-deflection plots, for various vehicle combinations, were determined in order to define the system stiffness of the combined vehicle components. Loading path and peak force measurements can then be used to evaluate the impact severity for low speed collisions in terms of delta-v and acceleration. The additional tests refine the stiffness corridors, previously published, which cover a wide range of vehicle types and impact configurations. The compression phase of a low speed collision can be modeled as a spring that is defined by the force-deflection corridors. This is followed by a linear rebound phase based on published restitution values [1,5].

Recent Progress on Mechanism of Mechanical Abuse

With the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs), lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy and power density have been widely applied as the power producer of EVs. However, the range of EVs has been criticized. To meet consumer demand for high power and long driving distances, the energy and power density of LIBs are getting higher and higher. However, LIBs with higher energy density are more prone to catastrophic thermal runaway (TR). In recent years, EV accidents due to TR of LIBs have been frequently reported, which makes consumers lose confidence in EVs. To solve the problem, we must understand the mechanism of LIBs TR, thereby reducing the likelihood of TR in EVs. However, the induction mechanism of LIB TR induced by mechanical abuse is sophisticated. This paper focuses on recent advances in the study of thermal TR characteristics of batteries caused by mechanical abuse, including bending, collisions, and penetration.

Development of Time-Temperature Analysis Algorithm for Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery Useful Life

Due to the recent progress in electrification, lithium-ion batteries have been widely used for electric and hybrid vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries exhibit high energy density and high-power density which are critical for vehicle development with high driving range enhanced performance. However, high battery temperature can negatively impact the battery life, performance, and energy delivery. In this paper, we developed and applied an analytical algorithm to estimate battery life-based vehicle level testing. A set of vehicle level tests were selected to represent customer duty cycles. Thermal degradation models are applied to estimate battery capacity loss during driving and park conditions. Due to the sensitivity of Lithium-Ion batteries to heat, the effect of high ambient temperatures throughout the year is considered as well. The analysis provides an estimate of the capacity loss due to calendar and cyclic effects throughout the battery life.

Transmission of sound under the influence of various environmental conditions

Electrified vehicles are particularly quiet, especially at low speeds due to the absence of combustion noises. This is why there are laws worldwide for artificial driving sounds to warn pedestrians. These sounds are generated using a so-called Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) which must maintain certain minimum sound pressure levels in specific frequency ranges at low speeds. The creation of the sound currently involves an iterative and sometimes time-consuming process that combines composing the sound on a computer with measuring the levels with a car on an outside noise test track. This continues until both the legal requirements and the subjective demands of vehicle manufacturers are met. To optimize this process and reduce the measurement effort on the outside noise test track, the goal is to replace the measurement with a simulation for a significant portion of the development.

Advanced squeak and rattle noise prediction for vehicle interior development – numerical simulation and experimental validation

Squeak and rattle (SAR) noise audible inside a passenger car causes the product quality perceived by the customer to deteriorate. The consequences are high warranty costs and a loss in brand reputation for the vehicle manufacturer in the long run. Therefore, SAR noise must be prevented. This research shows the application and experimental validation of a novel method to predict SAR noise on an actual vehicle interior component. The novel method is based on non-linear theories in the frequency domain. It uses the harmonic balance method in combination with the alternating frequency/time domain method to solve the governing dynamic equations. The simulation approach is part of a process for SAR noise prediction in vehicle interior development presented herein. In the first step, a state-of-the-art linear frequency-domain simulation estimates an empirical risk index for SAR noise emission. Critical spots prone to SAR noise generation are located and ranked.

Adaptive Inverse Control of Vibration Exciter for Tracking Target Acceleration of a Car Subsystem

This research aims to develop an inverse control method capable of adaptively simulating dynamic models of car subsystems in the rig-test condition. Accurate simulation of the actual vibration conditions is one of the most crucial factors in realizing reliable rig-test platforms. However, most typical rig tests are conducted under simple random or harmonic sweep conditions. Moreover, the conventional test methods are hard to directly adapt to the actual vibration conditions when switching the dynamic characteristics of the subsystem in the rig test. In the present work, we developed an inverse controller to adaptively control the vibration exciter referring to the target vibration signal. An adaptive LMS filter, employed for the control algorithm, updated the filter weights in real time by referring to the target and the measured acceleration signals.

Bushing Stiffness Optimization Method for NVH Improvement Using Blocked Force and Energy-Based Index in Suspension System

Reductions in powertrain noise have led to an increased proportion of road noise, prompting various studies aimed at mitigating it. Road excitation primarily traverses through the vehicle suspension system, necessitating careful optimization of the characteristics of bushings at connection points. However, optimizing at the vehicle assembly stage is both time-consuming and costly. Therefore, it is essential to proceed with optimization at the subsystem level using appropriate objective functions. In this study, the blocked force and energy-based index derived from complex power were used to optimize the NVH performance. Calculating the complex power in each bushing enables computing the power flow, thereby providing a basis for evaluating the NVH performance. Through stiffness injection, the frequency response functions (FRF) of the system can be predicted according to arbitrary changes in the bushing stiffness.
